The article analyzes the European and Russian experience of solving problems related to formation and preservation of national identity in the terms of global and local challenges. As for Ukraine we can name the following challenges as the most relevant: the regional separatism, the flow of internal migration caused by the hostilities and aggressive policy of Russia, including in the ideological sphere. However, as the article underlines, we can see the recent actualization of some similar problems in other circumstances and caused by other reasons in the states of Western Europe; their solution in each case are determined by the nature and severity of the challenges and political traditions and historical heritage of individual states. Although at this stage we cannot speak about some optimal European model of preservation of national identity and inclusion of the numerous immigrant groups with different culture, religion and forms of public life, we can assume that the most promising practices that engage individuals and communities in the public benefit and creative activities, and, thereby, strengthen the social solidarity and a sense of civic belonging to the national community. The usefulness of such experience for Ukraine proves the fact that during the Revolution of Dignity and in subsequent years the similar practices have been elaborated and have proved their effectiveness including in the terms of strengthening of national identity. The analysis of the Russian experience should be considered as useful because it presents a broader picture of the challenges that Ukraine faces in the relations with its eastern neighbor.
